Tank has been cycling for 5 1/2 wweeks now. Nitrite is still at 0.05, but Nitrate has risin very high to 20 and ammonia has risin from 0 to 0.25 again, why does this keep happening?

Lights are almost always off. Skimmer is running for 4 days now, and doing GREAT! i just cleaned rinsed it out. I threw in a a raw piece of shrimp at week 2.

Perhaps there are lots of nutrients in your tank? Nitrites are just a bus stop on the way to nitrates. Sounds like your nitrate cycle is well broken in, and rapidly moving ammonia to nitrates.

If you're cycling your tank, why did you throw in a piece of shrimp? Not challenging or being sarcastic. Just asking.

is there any shrimp left in there anywhere? The nitrates rising is part of the natural cycle, time for some chateo and or mangroves in the sump to start combating them.

i'm sure there is some pieces of shrimp somewhere in the tank, it broke apart and went all over the place, and haven't seen any of it. I don't have a sump but i do have a marineland emperor 400 powerfilter, would i be able to turn that into a fuge and put them in there if i decide to get some chateo or mangroves
