AquaIllumination will soon be bringing the first LiFi by Luxim based solid-state plasma lighting system. 8)

'The outlook of this technology is promising, however at this time pricing, features and availability are unknown due to the products early stage of development. From our initial testing we have found this single emitter appears to produce equivalent output as metal halide systems with the longevity of LED based systems. The light easily lends its self to a wide color spectrum range and intensity control.'

Good question. I heard that they are working on the heat issue so I would infer that they do put out some heat.

its not as hot as a metal halide

did some research and talked to a few that are in the process of testing this bulb and others like it ( sulphur plasma ), apparently one bulb can cover a 4' x 4' area with the same results as the sun. todd at cherrycoral.com was lucky enough to receive one to test and will be setting it up next week. hopefully he posts the results here, it not ill ask him if i can. back in the 90's this was attempted but failed, technology has changed since then. heres some sites:

Hey just wanted to chime in and let you guys know that Reefbuilders had an update AND a vid of the light in action. I'm really giddy right now because in my opnion this is better than LEDs at this point considering all the tech boundaries and previous hiccups with copyrights. Just as long as Aqua Illumination isn't going to be a jerk and turn out like Orbitech did, which if any is interested has taken down it's Apollo Web page and no longer even aknowledges an aquarium LED light.
