3reef recently got up close to the new Fluval G and was given a very impressive walk-through by the great guys at Hagen. From the water in, to water out, it was evident that Hagen has really done their homework with this filter and improved upon what may very well be every aspect of canister filtration from A-Z.

In fact, let's start with the water intake. The intake strainer has been modularized - meaning you can add additional ones to have the intake go along behind plants or rocks. They snap together with ball joints so that you can turn them to the desired angle as you wish. The end of the intake has been capped for nearly an inch up from the bottom. Why is this a good move? Perhaps you are like me and have put the intake too close to the sand bed and sucked in sand. This helps prevent that. The hose quick-connects twist easily to remove...

The new sumps by Siphon Filtration LLC offer true wet-dry filtration thanks to siphon tubes within the sump that will cause the water to rise as it flows in from the aquarium until the siphon 'breaks.' The Siphon Filtratrion sumps feature a protein skimmer chamber that gets 'preloaded.' What this means is as the water level rises and falls in the main chamber, proteins and amphipathic molecules are lifted to the surface until they reach the gate leading to the protein skimmer chamber. This effect has been dubbed the 'preload function' as it raises the level of protein molecules in the chamber. COOL.

3reef is still a bit blind from looking under the hood of the new FrancoLED-Solar Ultra Bright LED lamp that will be hitting the market in a few weeks. The new Ultra Bright sits on an sliding track and packs some interesting features such as adjustable color temperature up to 20k, advanced timer with 5 memory sets that allow control of LEDS seperately and the ability to hit 12000 lux in most aquarium depths. We might be able to vouch for that. OUCH! (more pics in thread)

The Marineland Double Bright LED Lamps will be hitting the stores by the end of the year and look very promising for the average hobbyist. They are slim - the slimmest LED lamp 3reef has seen - light-weight with a solid build. Moving these around to get to the aquarium will be a breeze. Prices and specs to follow as soon as we get them.
