Any old rock will become colonized with bacteria, but only on the surface; and won't be nearly as efficient as the coral-based rock from the sea. The difference is that "live rock" from the sea is very porous, and has thousands of times the surface area as a piece of granite, limestone, or most rock from dry land.

To the original poster, the rock that Reef Cleaners sells is prime stuff for our purposes, and it comes at a reasonable price. All you do is add water--nature will take care of the rest.

"anything" in all reality will become "live" in an established tank. wood, clay, paper, practically anything. But not everything will be as beneficial as the next. Thats why us reefers go for porous rock from the ocean. More surface area to have coralline, bacterias, and other beneficial organisms to colonize on the surface.

Porous rock is best.... you dont want dense rock in your tank. Not that its bad. Wont be as beneficial to your tank compared to porous rock.

But yea I +1 to what sparky posted above me.
