Honestly, I think like may be a larger part of the puzzle then most people give credit. I have two tanks sharing a common sump right now. Both obviously have identical parameters and are sharing bioload. The lower 29g tank is running 4 T5's and a 150w halide, the top tank is a lone 250w halide. The point of comparison is the identical PVC overflows on both. The lower is exploding in coraline, the top is MUCH slower. Likewise, rock covering seems very lopsided.
Top tank is a 20k bulb, bottom is a 14k halide with 2 18k T5's and 2 Actinics.
Nothing scientific, just an observation.
