i started doing the same thing. im going to do it every water change(once a week). i also use the baster to suck up accumulation on the floor of my refugium....then spit it out into my filter sock just before i change it. this way i clean the floor of the tank and dont waste any tank water.

Just another reason you are so cool :) Diatom filters are so under utilized these days. Seems people don't even know what they are anymore :(

I use a PH to blow off the rocks but I do use my feeder which is a turkey baster cut in half and 20"s of 1/2 inch PVC added to blow up the top layer of my sand bed. I do this at everyother w/c even tho I have plenty of stirrers. My filter feeders really love the stuff that gets blown up into the water column.

never thought about the sucking action, I could use that on cyano laying on CC/sand substrate without starting up a sand storm.. good idea.. K++ ::)

Yes well you guys are missing the point a diaton filter will go anywhere a baster or syringe will and the filter will actualy suck up the stuff and remove it from the water system.. All you guys are doing is blowing it around and its appearant that the water flows in the problem in the tank and its just setteling back again . These filter will even capture and hold Ich spores and other parasites .
