Algae loves light. Tons of it. Constant light brings all the algae to the hidden part of the tank.

Agree many types of algae will benefit from 24/7 lighting; however, there are a few species that will not. Instead, their growth will stall and their nutrient uptake will reduce to a non-productive level.

FB- Being in captivity with no threat of predation also goes against nature for every single creature we keep. Just sayin'. ;)

I couldn't have said it better. I personally run my figs light 24/7 now and I have chaeto and prolifera....growth is really good.

So, what if you went to a 12/12 sump light?

Would your growth be cut in half?

I run mine 12/12, I'm also known around here for giving and trades gallon bags of chaeto all the time out of my sump.

So, if I ran my lights 24/7, I'd get twice the growth? I think I'd get even less growth IMHO.

I also so this to lessen the Ph swing with the DT lights, as the sump is lighted opposite the DT.

oh snap. Time for an experiment. Ok tod get another light and then measure the mass of two clumps of chaeto that are identical. Run each under your lamps, one 12h and 1 24h for a month and remeasure!

Good idea, good research plan. They would both have to be in the same water, from the same colony of chaeto, and the same light, same water, etc.

The only variable would or should be the timer, or lack therof.

Too bad I don't want to try, I like the fact that my sump light is on basically almost opposite my DT. I read somewhere it's a good thing- but you know what reading will do for ya!

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
And while your at it Todd track the differences in pH with regard to changes in the photoperiod.

Do plants photosynthesis at the same rate when kept under light 24/7, does this affect the macro-algae influence on the pH.

    Seriously I am curious. Kthnx.

    Actually someone has attempted this.

I remember seeing a post, of a similar experiment. Except it was not done simultanesouly, it was done in series, as in one after the other over a few months.

The 12/12 was far superior, on THIS trial, on his set up.

I didn't see where Ph was tested however.

Hey, you controller folks, with an instantaneous read out- this is for you!
