    Mr Bond: I wouldn't remove the shell anyway. Leave the empty shells if you get any. Other crabs might get them later

    Sorry I jumped the gun on this one. Like I say, when I looked in the tank at the shell it looked empty. Wasn't until I took it out I saw the crab - that's why I had ruled out the molting. Thanks for everyone's responses!! I have a couple of old snail shells in the tank if a crab decides he wants one of those, but I'll look into getting some more. Thanks again for everyone's input. I know more about crabs today because of it.

    I don't think that there is anybody here who hasn't thaught a mold is a dead hermit or shrimp.

    to this day i ponder if my fire shrimp has died or molted at first glance! A sucessfull molt is a good sign of water quality, especially with a scarlet as they have shorter life spans than most and are "toucher" than most others.
