    I don't think you should be doing water changes while your tank is cycling.

    That's what it is...buffer. It helps maintain alkalinity.

    I was led to believe that water changes is what helps keep the tank cycling. You have a new-be here so I am going off of hear say from people. I thought I was doing it right...guess not. I'll get the hang of it one of these days.

    Water changes are considered routine maintenance but not until your cycle has completed.

    I guess that bad decisions will put me back another month. Glad I'm not in a hurry...:-/ Thanks a bunch for letting me know.:2thumbsup I am really glad I got introduced to this sight, it has been really helpful, my LFS is 50 minutes away so I can't go there often for advice.

    I guess we're all newbies in here to a degree. The only pro in all of this is "Mother Nature" herself.

    On average a cycle will last 4-6 weeks (give or take). During this period you should leave the water alone and let the cycle complete itself.
