Live rock is outrageously expensive, but it has life on and in it. Coralline is a good filtration and cycler for a tank. As stated above, you could "seed" live rock, by taking a couple pieces of live rock, and a bunch of regular rock. Then, in due time, it will all be live rock. Sometimes live rock comes with starfish, shrimp, crabs, worms, etc. Mainly, people buy it from the impatience it takes to seed live rock.

As for pods, they are small organisms tha swim in water and hide in rocks. Go to google and search "copepod" and you should get a good image. Refugiums do restore pod population, as long as there isn't anything in the refugium that will consume them. Pods are needed greatly for some fish, such as Mandarin Dragonets, but just about all fish eat them. Hips this helps. :D

I hope you didn't actually think the rock was alive. The rock costs so much due to importing taxes, shipping, and the LFS needs to make a little money. I have seen it go for 4.99lb - 21.99lb. If I was to start a new tank, I would buy mainly base rock and a few lbs of rock from different parts of the world to get as much diversity bacteria and organism wise as possible.

What do you mean there is no fudge?

Not to belittle, but no it's not. Coralline is a calcified algae. It doesn't significantly filter the water, nor does it cycle the tank.

I just found the fudge in a "smaller" tank in the house.

Live rock can be $$ so I bought dry rock and have a few pieces of live rock to seed it. My live rock is starting to come more to "life" and is beinging to seed my dry rock I have. To me, it's more exciting to watch the LR seed the DR as time goes by but then again I'm a freak for the world of biology :)
