    I went to PetCo and had the same experience. They most definitely look like button polyps. The growth on my rock that looks exactly like yours as (best I can tell from the picture) are button polyps. They were brownish at PetCo becuase the all tanks at my PetCo are under T12 lighting. They almost instantly turned green under my actinic and T5's and are growing well.
