Really the only con is it just does not pull good dry gunk, yea the column or cylinder that is part of the collection cup gets dirty but I just did not get the good stuff. Everything else was positive, never had to tinker with settings, not niosy-I loved the fact I could have the return from my CA reactor dump into it to help expell CO2-but it did not produce what I expected-especially for the $$$
Also after my bad experiance with vodka dosing, and that all being dependant on a GOOD skimmer or death can occur (which it did) I sought out yet another.
I liked the idea of the JB(?) fitting that I had my reactor going into but it just did not pull enough "good skimmate".
I read many reviews that the Mag7 it comes with is under rated for it so I added a Mag 9 which made it better than I later added a Pentair 1500 gph pump as a trial-granted the last one really had to be choked back. I did find the mag 9 helped produce more skimmate but it just does not have to contact area needed-IMO, and at 390.00 brand new-ouch I expect chunks of thick brown sludge-LOL

Did I mention I have 3 skmmers (not 4 as earlier mentioned) for sale-

    We need a "Back on Topic"-Just 4 me;D

IMO, I think that you didnt "fine tune" the skimmer to get the results you wanted and may have just gotten frustrated. I have gotten both types of skimate as you mentioned.

OH that would not surprise ma at all-LOL- I did use the skimmer for a few months, so I really gave it a chance I thought

How do you fine tune it?, all I ever saw was to keep the water line about 1/2 inch from the top of the main body, you have one so I hope you know what area I am referring to, other that, I never saw or read anything about making any adjustments.

How do you "fine tune" you can PM me if you want to not clog up this thread-short answer probably.

    Thanks again in advance

I have the ASM Mini G for my 55G and it works great. I also have an Octopus NW 150 for my 125G. Lastly on my FOLR tank I have a Coralvue skimmer 100 and its a piece of junk. My vote would be for either the octopus or the asm they are both great skimmers. The key is needle wheel.

You can fine tune the skimmer in many ways, Im assuming that you read the manual. You need to play with the Air intake valve, Gate valve and what water level you have the skimmer in. If I remember correctly, if you wanted dry skimate, you needed to lower the water level inside the "blk box" section of the skimmer. I will admit that to find that "sweet spot" is a P.I.T.A., but once you got it, its a work horse. I honestly dont think its over-rated compared to other units going for thousands of dollars.

I had to run the gate valve restricted a bit and the mag 7 at full tilt, I adjust the level in the "Black Box"
I guess I had just expected more, but in hindsight-my tank (I mean my "present" tank) is only 5 months old-

HHMMM probablly relative to the amount of waste it is able to pull-cant pul what does not exist.

Maybe I like my newest one since its BIGGER-isnt bigger always better-rhetorical joke.

Im just always looking for a reason to "change/upgrade" something in my tank-LOL

Maybe get a life and I would not be so tank crazy:hehe:

I'm glad yours is doing what its meant to, perhaps mine was all along.

    Take care!

My standard list for this size tank is

    PM Bullet-2
    ETSS 600XR
    AquaC EV-240
    ASM G-3
    Reef Octopus NWB-200

Of the five, the ETSS is probably the most tweaky, but once dialed in, you get some great results.
