I have heard a lot through various threads about retrofit kits for T5 lights...I'm embarrassed to say that I don't know what they are. Do they enable you to convert one lighting system to another (of the same size)? So, for example, if I wanted to convert my PC fixture (48", 4x65W PC + 3 moonlight LED) to T5's, could I buy a T5 retrofit kit of 48" and convert it? Sorry for the newbie question...

If you build a custom canopy, you don't need (or can't use) a full fixture so you just mount everything in it. Sometimes, if you don't have a canopy, you can disassemble a current fixture and mount everything in that.

I don't have a hood for my tank - I currently just let the light fixtures rest on the top of the tank (on top of eggcrate). So I guess I'd still need to keep the skeleton of the fixture if I bought a retrofit kit to convert my PC to T5?

How easy are these to install for someone with no electrical experience?
