It is all over the substrate and appears to be attached like coralline. There is nothing to brush off or pull out since it is right on it. It is like green diatoms sort of.

Tank is over a year old. Nitrates run higher than they should in my tank. Ph and temp are normal.

It's probably Ostreobium sp. which is a burrowing algae.

From the sound of it I could have Ostreobium. :(

Now how do I combat it?

What are your phosphates? If nitrates are high, then phosphates are probably high too and that can fuel any type of algae. Do you run any type of phosphate absorbing media (GFO, phosguard)?

I am running carbon and GFO in a BRS dual reactor.

Nitrates are zero measured this morning with a salifert kit only a few months old. I don't have a phosphate tester.

Water changes once a month with rodi water that tests at 0 TDS.

I've never personally messed with it. Coralline eventually took over.

Maybe ill scoop out the affected gravel and let it exist on the LR. The gravel isn't pretty and white the way it should be....and my WAF is low because of it. :)

Ya, your substrate is pretty loaded with it.

It really is. I've never seen anything like it before.
