    Hello Everyone:

Most hobbyists know DrTim’s is THE source for nitrifying bacteria based on our years of research on nitrifying bacteria and the fact that our bacteria work but we are more than just nitrifying bacteria.

Since our founding, we have developed other bacterial-based products from bacteria isolated from our tanks and ponds that includes:

Waste-Away: 100% Natural Bacteria that consume particulate and dissolved organics, nitrates and phosphates. This product works to eliminate the nutrients that can cause algae, Cyanobacteria and other common aquarium problems.

Re-Fresh: Bacteria developed specifically to combat Cyanobacteria. 100% natural, won’t affect the bio-filter, this product eliminates Cyanobacteria. Note Re-Fresh, like many other Cyanobacteria products only treat the symptom. To truly get rid of Cyanobacteria you need to go after the source so should follow-up with Waste-Away.

Eco-Balance: A 100% Natural probiotic bacteria mixture that attacks various species of Vibrio and other bacteria. This product is used to pro-actively keep your system clear of pathogenic bacteria.

    BUT that’s not all.

We also sell AquaRay LED lights and controllers. These are premier quantity systems, with CREE LEDs, developed specifically for fish only and reef tanks. Note: the controllers work with some other popular brands of LEDs.

And we also sell books. There are still a lot of good books out there but they can be hard to find – we have them at great prices.

To celebrate our joining the 3Reef community we are offering the following specials at our online store:

25% off all DrTim’s products and books. Use coupon code 3reef25 when prompted during the checkout process.

10% off all LED lights and controllers. Use coupon code 3reef10 at check-out.

Offer is good until 28 February 2011.

Thanks everyone. It's great to be here.

RedGambit is right, our 25% off intro deal ends midnight February 28th.

Check-out the before and after pictures from Mike Stewart of his 300 gallon display tank. He uses Waste-Away bacteria to get rid of algae and keep his tank really clean. Plus his corals really love it. WASTE-AWAY

    Dr Tim,

when using your bacteria products like waste away, is it necessary to add a carbon source like vodka? I know none of your instructions say anything about adding a carbon source, but what would happen if vodka is added or bio pellet is used?

When starting with Waste-Away and Eco-Balance I suggest starting without adding a liquid organic source. The bacteria will degrade organics in the system and if you start adding a liquid organic that may cause a bacterial bloom. Best to start slow - no liquid and see how it goes. The mixes are very concentrated. In regards to use with polymers - again as we state on the bottle start with a half a dose. If you start to see cloudy water that means the bacteria are multiply and consuming the organics and nitrate and phosphate. Don't add more bacteria until the water starts to clear-up.

    Any other questions?

    Thanks

    thanks.

vodka and biopellets aside, what is considered organics in the tank that the bacteria will degrade? detritus/uneaten food? how about green hair algae?

I did the two half dose and one full dose of waste away 2 days apart and did not see any tank cloudiness.

First - when we speak of organics we generally mean dead stuff so hair algae, cyanobacteria etc aren't considered 'organics' but, of course, are organic in natural.

That said, there are two general categories of organics: dissolved and particulate. The bacteria work on both. Detritus and uneaten food are particulate organics, the dissolved organics are what cause you water to start smelling and turn the water yellow if not removed.

You're not seeing cloudiness so you can increase the dose but every tank is different. I had a guy call yesterday and at half the dose his water was noticeably cloud. The reasons for differences are huge but it is always best to start slow and see how your tank will react to the addition of the bacteria. In your case, you can increase the dosage.

The bacteria will get into the crevices and areas you can clean and get rid of the organics there. You should also see a drop in nitrate and phosphate.
