i would recomend buying your water ro water from the store till you can afford a ro filter

you may at some point go and invest in a purifier.i only use a small screw on tap tapwater purifier but i'll get the right kind eventually.the bad stuff builds up over time in your tank.i do small water changes so i see no point in doing anything other than mixing the water to the proper salinity and doing the change about 20 minutes later.if i did a big change maybe i would take more precautions.

I keep about 40g of saltwater made up with a PH and air stone in there and this water is just for emergencies and my weekly Q-tank change.

I use one in water mix barrel to help mix in salt and more importantly increase oxygen level in new water which coming from tap it is very low in.

May be other good reasons...but none bad I have heard of...:-/

PS: Why store "extra" mixed exchange water in first place???

Mix up what you need and use all...whenever water change needed.

Top off water a different story...always good to have spare on hand.

    PSS:

From Mixing Instructions on back of IO Bucket:

"(2)...Stir vigorously to ensure a good mix. Although the Instant Ocean solution may be used immediately, we suggest aerating the water until it achieves oxygen/carbon dioxide equilibrium..."

(Expect these guys know what they are talking about...so I do what they say by adding airstone to mix bucket...)

Do for at least couple of hours. Can be very dangerous to use freshly mixed water right away.

Make sure both SG and needed temp are correct before doing exchange.

I know exactly how much salt I need to mix amount of water I am making in plastic garbage pail. I initially use very warm water, mix in needed salt, then let sit, aerate, and cool down to desired temp before using...usually takes about 4 hours.. (warmer water helps dissolve salt). --- just don't adjust SG until at correct temp.

Expect we all use different methods...
