Ich is not inherent to a saltwater tank. It is introduced through hitchiking in fishes and sometimes live rock/corals. Normally experts (I'm no expert!) would require us to quarantine fishes and new acquisitions.
However, being the hard heade aquarist I am, I still got to introduce ich (plus a host of other parasites!) into my establish reef tank. So I got myself an 8 watt UV. I noticed two things. One - algae did not come on as fast as it would when the UV is working 24/7. And Two - lack of pods in the main tank. Seems the UV killed anything in the water column.

The Ich on my hippo tang was lessen. I fed my fish garlic soaked food and stopped using the UV. The tang lives happily now with no visible ich or scratchin or heavy breathing.

My pod population is one of my concerns as I don't want my dragonette to go hungry.
