I tried using light diffuser, eggcrate, whatever you want to call it and frankly I think its ugly.

    Has anyone tried using netting?

    Say something like:

    Knotted twine netting

I was thinking something like that stretched on a wood/plastic frame would look better.

Would allow more light through and keep the fish from carpet surfing.

That is a large hole that a lot of fish can get through. Bulk Reef Supply has a clear screen material that has much smaller openings. Give that a try.

Just get the netting from BRS and go to Lowe's or Home Depot. They have DIY screen frames.

+1million on the 1/4 mesh from BRS, I loooooove my DIY top, always post this vid below for any others looking for solutions on good tops. I also have a 250w MH pendant and there are no issues with light diffusion or heat that I have experienced.

You can def get all the materials you need (framing, frame corners, spline, spline roller) from Home Depot or Lowes and just get the mesh via BRS.

Here's the vid on the "how to" and a pic of my top.
