I read this the other day
What Is the Most Humane Way to Euthanize a Fish?
I just want to toss this out there since it wasn't mentioned:
Altho most peeps don't keep it around, MS-222 ("fin-quel") is probably THE best stuff to use, however, it's more expensive than clove oil, and generally needs to be ordered from an e-tailer, so clove oil is more widely used due to avaialbility in a pinch.
Renee and I have used both methods (clove oil and MS-222), and if used properly, both work well. Additionally, both solutions can also be used to sedate fish for certain procedures, such as tube feeding (obviously one uses a different protocol than for euthanasia).
Separate names with a comma.
