The algae on the edge of this rock looks almost like an anenome, but is a freshwater tank. Is this hair algae? I have never had it before.

Black beard algae, a type of red algae.

You will need to scrub it off, or get Siamese Algae Eaters to eat it.

+1 2in10 - you can take a toothbrush to it or get an algae eater to take care of it. id also considering running something like fluval clearmax in your filtration if it gets out of control. i use it on my cichlid tanks to keep my PO4 down below 0.25/ppm. without it, and using tap water, i was >1/ppm. i change it out when i start to see the PO4 on the rise.

edit: i didnt realize this was a planted tank. if you're trying to keep a standard NPK ratio for growing the plants then you're going to have to get the fish to handle that nuisance algae. i ran into this issue with my 5gal planted tank. i couldnt seem to maintain the proper NPK for plant growth and deter nuissance algae.

I think a using Seachem Flourish Excel can help also. It is a carbon adder for CO2 and the chemical is hard on red algae.
