This is why you could not pay me to use L/R.. Take a slime screwdriver and gouge it in the hole to kill it.. Reefing 101 you have to ask what it is ? then kill it .. ;D From the description of the one claw it could be whats called a Thalassinidean shrimp ??? on the spelling of that one..:) .. They have one predominate claw or pincher these shrimp live only in rock holes.. And I'd not rule out a pistol or mantis either the claw maybe missing and regrowing ..Lesson to new people neve buy a problem in L/R.. Just say no..:)

I use the old base rock from Fla I always bring back a few hundred pounds at 4.00 a ton :) I'll get 1 or 2 dollars worth , and over the yrs I have brought up all the Tonga and Fuji and higher end rock from people CHEAP who lost control of the pest and got out of te hobby.. I nuke the rock with bleach and clean it then store it.. I have never used a Live rock but on one system mid 80's And had more issues then all my other systems combined to date.. :)

I'm fighting Byropis now from a infestation from several yrs ago in a 90 the boss lady used L/R in along with her DSB she done came a long ways baby! LOL everything but the byropis is history.. I used one rock that had a corals grown on it from that old system.. ):

At our shop we get tons of rock in from system changes people want I nuke it all then reseed it for coralline and bacteria ..We sell that.. And I'll double the money back guarantee there is nothing in or on it to eat your tank..

camilsky those arent it, tangster its not a mud shrimp. if anybody has ever seen the movie with the sand worms the tip kinda looks like that but with two instead of three ends. tangster the biodiversity of life was my goal with this tank, granted there are predators, but there are also friendies. everything on this earth has a purpose, even the mantis. ive had tanks in the past that were just plain boring with bleached rock, no fun. ive also had tanks that didnt have rock at all, the structure was made out of plastic molding with many areas for flow and coral connections. owning a store and dealing with the public sucks, thats why i got out of it, owning a lfs is brutal. so i understand your position.

tangster do you consider a chiton friend or foe? just wondering

Well if it was bio diversity that you wanted then you seem to have all you paid for. :) I've owned and sold a few LFS myself and help to set up a few with their coral propagation and grow out systems . I in the last week was offered a porposale to open a LFS Nope not me.. But As for if I consider a Chition as friend or foe ,, I always considered them a little changed ancient line of molluscs that crawls the rock.. And as long as they are not to large in their numbers.
I always thought they made great rock cleaners.. As for Bio diversity I'd compare my tank that was started with all dead base rock almost in the league with your's .. My rocks looks as old and covered with worms pods coralline as any I have ever seen. And I wish to god I had tossed that one coral and its rock out in August 06 when I set this 180 up..All the rock was totally nuked .. And I will never use L/R why ?? lots of mony to buy wet rocks LOL Nope not me.
Way I see rock is its just a place to set my corals and if I can see rock I need more corals nd growth ..

the claw is not that of a mantis or a pistol, we know more about outerspace than our own oceans. hopefully i can get better pics.

tryu to "lure" it out with some piece of fish or clam or what not. also try the same at night. almost all crabs and shrimp will eat some meaty food if givin the oppurtunity (detritus/S*** isnt the best tasting). in my opinion, if it aint bad, let it live, if its bad, blow it up/KILL.

whatever it is, didnt eat the shrimp. even stuck the shrimp in the hole and it didnt take it. heres some more pics. each end looks like a curved boomerang. the total width of the hole is less than a 1/4". so these are the probably the best pics i can get. the hsi was hi, tripod and super-macro.
