My mangrove is losing leaves. I have had it about 2 months, but it is not as happy as it should be. Is there a link for mangrove care? From what I hear, they are pretty hardy and un demanding, but mine is not happy now.

It is not in sand, its roots are simply on a piece of LR in the fuge. It does get some salt spray, is that an issue?

what kind of light is it under. The salt spray shouldn't matter they will grow fully submerged just fine.

mist the leaves, check your magnesium (1200 or better for mangroves), and it should be fine assuming the light that got it going is the same one on there.

I have to see what kind of light is on the tank it came from, but it is a 13w CFL that I use for growing chaeto and other macros well.

I will mist the leaves with freshwater. I will have to look at the article you have on reefcleaners.

Thanks guys!! K+ to you all:)

    Yeah, the roots look great.

Apparently this is a Hawaiian mangrove, whatever that kind is. Misting the leaves sounds like a logical thing to do to emulate rainfall. I misted the leaves just now.

yea i read somewhere that the bottom most leaves collect the nutrients that are pulled out of the water and they are then shed from the mangrove to rid the bad nutrients... just my 2 cents

losing leaves is normal, but if it look stressed...if it was from hawaii it probably was under the sun, they don't have laws that protect mangroves like florida does, so they are often removed. will be a red, white or black mangrove, post a pic and i can tell you which. (there are other species too, but i doubt it would be any of those - very likely to be a red). if you get an established mangrove it is important to acclimate it, seeds can just go in, but trees should get some acclimation otherwise they tend to be stressed and go down hill. black mangroves aren't very prone to this, but reds are.

I will get a picture, but it was in a local reefer's sump for months. It hasn't seen real sun in a while.
