Why do you need a plug? Why can you directly adhere it to the live rock?

easer to frag it from a plug then trying to remove a rock from the stack to frag if i get it on a plug i dont like i just mount the frag on one i like, i use several different kinds of plugs depending on where i want it placed in the rock work in the tank.

I prefer live rock as a base, plugs are lame, I use them only as a last resort!

I prefer getting my frags on a piece of rock rubble. Those plugs are ugly.

    right there with ya.

for my frags i buy a piece of base rock and hack it with a hammer so i get managable pieces. very cheap to do, doesn't look bad, and it discourages hermits from cleaning (because there is nothing to clean on the base rock of course) so they won't fall over from those hermits. :)

I use the ceramic ones made by Alternative reef... They also make frag stations that eventually look like live rock. Heck of alot better than egg crate.

Wait to you get the plastic plugs. Not only are they hideous, they are fairly buoyant. Now THOSE suck!

ora uses those and Ihate them. I always dremel most of the plug down and since acros encrust pretty rapidly you can't see them most of the time

I dont understand the problem most plugs are attached for sales display purpose or grow out reasons not for ease of the aquarist lol, infact most people just buy the frag knock it off the plug and mount it in the D/T.
If it has encrusted its simply cut off at the base and mounted in the D/T and the encrusted plug goes to the aquarists frag/grow out tank or is tossed/recycled.
