That brace keeps the front from bowing out. If the brace went, the front glass would bow out bigtime, put pressure on the seals and, worse case scenario, blow out the tank. Water, coral and fish on the floor. I check my center brace a few times a week (just eyeball it). And my tank is only six months old.

If I were you I would take the center brace out, and replace it with a piece of glass, secured by nylon 1/4" bolts and nuts.

Several folks have done this, and it works well. I can find a link for ya, but it really is pretty easy, and 100% safe.

I almost did this to my 90g, but then I got 2 MH ballasts for free, so that changed my mind.

    Isn't a 46g a bowfront anyways?

Yeah, it is and I laughed a little because of that.

Let me dig up a link, but it really is pretty simple. The 46 is a 3 foot tank right? Those have to be the only 3 foot tanks with center braces, well, that and like a 65g. I know shorter 4 footers like a 30 and 40 breeder don't have braces, and my 3' 35g does not either.

I would not doubt that a 46 bow can take having no brace at all, but I would replace it with a glass one to be safe.
