This is another of my half-assed diy projects. I took a dish I had nails in, a under gravel filter tube, a air stone, and a small air pump I have had for I do not know for how many years, and made a skimmer. I made it as a proof of concept(I call it poc). I will be building a 5 foot version of this using pvc soon. It is just starting to skim pretty good after a day. I might even use it in a nano.

Do you have a lid for the collection cup for the skimmate to bind too a bit?

That sort of looks like the first one I built before skimmers were commercially available. I read an article and thought it was neat. I think it was back in 82. It was a lift tube, an air stone and 1/2 a shampoo bottle. I stuck the tube through the hole in the neck of the bottle and instant skimmer. I used a turkey baster to drain it. As long as the airstone made lots of bubbles it worked pretty good. I had to change stones about once a month or so. I had it on a 55 and by today's standards it was insufficient. It could be fine for a nano.

    Nice DIY

BTW, there are some monster skimmers out there powered by airstones.

I just ordered my coralife luft pump. For my new skimmer. mmmm 7.0 psi. Three limewood stones and 5 feet of 3'' pvc in my livingroom. My girl friend probably would not like the new furniture.
