That's true but if your sand bed is deep enough, they'll still get plenty of room. For example, my egg crate takes up about 1/8 of my 2" sand bed. My shrimp won't be missing out on much because even if it wasn't there they would still hit the bottom glass.

My first use of egg crate was on these 2 things. First was the frag rack I had to make so I could move some sps from my 29g, and the egg crate top to keep the fishies in the tank until I get screen from bulk reef supply. However with the top I do not notice a large loss of light or shadowing in the tank, but there is a huge amount of light spillage coming off it now.

Stole the idea. Used a mag float, egg crate, and super glue

Well, yes. But if your sand bed is deep enough, there is no point in the egg crate...

Day 2 with egg crate, I finally put together a gravity fed float valve operated ATO. Used some egg crate and zip ties to make a bracket that I could fasten to the sump without drilling in anywhere near the water line. 3 small holes in the top brace portion of the sump and zip tied the egg crate fixture to that.

No, the LFS around here sell them but they can also be purchased from BRS. They are just some type of cheap float valve that work well for RO storage containers and stuff. I use one in my other tank for a gravity fed auto top off and decided to use the same thing for this tank, just need to find somewhere to put a bucket now.
