In a word, no. It is not essential to have waves in a tank, although corals and even fish do appreciate random flow, or some variability in flow rather than just constant laminar flow. Many people run very successful tanks with just a few powerheads directed toward each other to create random flow.

Personally I am considering either a vortech MP40 or a few of these Korallia EVs because I love to watch alternating flow in the tank, love to watch the tentacles go in different directions, and possibly to help encourage natural behaviors in my fish.

I am going to get two of these for my 90 gallon once I get it up and running do you think two of the 1400's would be overkill for my 90 gallon I have plans to make it mostly a softie tank with some LPS (Frogspawn Right?) and some SPS later on down the road.

I now have four of the 1400's in my tank.

I have 2 on each side.... eachside alternates with eachother. So I have some type of random flow.

I have a 750 and a nano 425 in my 52 gal and both work fantastically well. Will probably get another 750 before too long.
