    Hey Everyone!

I am thinking of buying a trio of Ocellaris Clowfish soon and Ive heard that they do better with a host Anemone. I have heard that they can be hard to keep and look after, as well as denagerous to corals and small fish.

Which Anemone do you guys think will be the highest rated for survival, to host ocellaris, least dangerous to corals/fish and one that doesn't move around all that much.

    Thanks Guys,

    What lighting do you have?

Typically Clown fish are kept in Pairs no more.

Depending if your lighting is correct I would say the best Anemone would be a bubble tip.

I have a Metal Halide Twin 250W with 10K Bulbes.

Ive seen groups of 7 clownfish! but I was thinking of getting a family of three cause I just love them and they look better in bigger groups.

As for the best and easiest anemones that would be the Flower(Caribbean sp. and the Condylactis). The only thing is that they probably won't do for you as you want to house Clowns in a symbiotic relationship with an anemone.
Therefore, it would be best to go with a Pacific Long Tentacle or a Sebae Anemone IMO. The other questions, I really can't answer as any anemone that isn't happy will move around to find that "happy place". And as for the toxic part of the equasion, all anemones pack a punch however, the Carpets are the worst as far as moving around and damage to corals and fish!

7 clownfish in a tank would eventually end up as 2. Two of the clowns will eventually pair up then systematically kill off the remainder of the clown fish. I've seen it happen repeatedly to folks who thought that they could keep more than 2 clowns in a tank because they had seen it done elsewhere. Unless you're ready to positively lose one of the three clown fish, I wouldn't try it. Also, clowns do not "do better" with an anemone in an aquarium. In the wild they will because the anemone will protect the clown from predators but since clowns are safe from predation in an aquarium, they neither do better or worse with or without an anemone.

Lastly, I have to ask how old your tank is because I wouldn't even think of adding an anemone until the tank is over 9 months to a year old.

A clown will do just fine in an aquarium with as well as without an anemone. The thing is that without an anemone you don't have the worries associated with them.
I am fortunate to have a long tentacle anemone that is as ahppy as can be in the small 35hex reef tank(other than the 3 times he got sucked up in the powerhead, he recoved and has gained the full size and them some before the accidents.
Moreover, my false Percula for over a year wanted nothing to do with the anemome, just last month when I got home from work, I found him in the anemone-go figure?!!!!

Okay thanks guys. Amcarrig, I have had the tank for 5-6 years now and its all pretty much stable. I never knew about the 2 pairing and killing the rest as the dealer told me that they came like that in a group and should be fine together. Thanks for the heads up!! You could have just saved a clownfishes life :)

The dealer also told me that they will prefer to have an anemone and its will reduce aggression etc. Maybe my dealer is pulling my leg :(

Are ocellaris clowns prone to aggression? I thought that they were the more calm individuals.

Thanks for all the help guys, I might just give the anemone a miss because it may damage corals and fish. My trigger is a bit picky however, and you dont think it would be better for the clown to have an anemone to hide if he gets overly aggressive?

    Cheers,

I have a Flower anemone, and a bubble anemone. the bubble move's all over the tank I think he's shy. Ha. But my Ocellaris Clownfish just stay way from both of them.

My first Ocellaris Clownfish I had, I think was kill by the bubble anemone, I heared that if the clown doe's something wrong, the bubble anemone will sting.

I'm starting to think so, yes.

As for aggression in oscellaris, any animal, domestic or wild, is capable of aggression depending on the circumstances. All clownfish are fiercly territorial and will not tolerate any fish besides its mate in its territory, period :)

If you absolutely must have an anemone, I would go with a rose bubble tip. They're very hardy and oscellaris have been known to nest in them. Keep in mind, however, that the anemone will roam until it finds a spot that it's happy in and it might do some damage to your corals in the process.

Okay Amcarrig, thanks alot for your help!!

Do clownfish need an anemone to nest?

Do those rose bubble tips move around alot? If i get a small one say a couple of inches, will it still be harmful to corals if it comes into contact with them?

    Thanks,
