Make sure your floor can handle the full weight of your reef. Water is heavy.

join a local reef club and try to become an active member. It will pay off by getting to know the locals and finding new friends that share the same passion locally.

For example, my local club does group buys, bus trips to multiple reef stores and many many other positives!

If in doubt, take it out. It just doesn't make good sense to risk hundreds of dollars in pets to spare the life of an unknown hitchhiker. You wouldn't leave fleas on your cat, ticks on your dog, or mice in your cupboard, so why would you not remove a potential hazard from your tank? If you are so sympathetic toward pests, at least rehome it in your sump or set up a species tank.

Use RO/DI or distilled water only. Modern salt mixes are designed for purified water, and while they may not be 100% perfect, adding minerals from your tap can easily skew your chemistry. FTR, two years is not a success story; in the early days before we had water purification, it took closer to five for tanks to crash.

here is one that almost burnt my house down. Make sure your electrical strips have a breaker on them.

Enjoy your tank and this amazing hobby. Find a routine that works for you and your tank while also getting to enjoy what your working so hard for. To much work and frustration and not enough enjoyment will burn a reefer out quickly.

Size matters! Bigger can sometimes be better in this hobby.

Considering the cost of the average setup,a RO/DI filter is a inexspensive piece of equipment that will make maintaining your tank so much easier.
