Always clean the inside and outside of the tank before taking pictures.

When an emergency happens, and it will happen, know who to call for quick and reliable information on solving the problem.

Acquaint yourself with local reefers or join a local fish club, members are generally helpful and having someone physically show you proper fish keeping techniques is invaluable.

Don't use test strips, liquid testing is much more accurate and in reef keeping every part per million is important.

(Opinion) avoid in-tank hydrometers, with all the current in reef aquariums it's bound to skew the meter one way or the other. Place hydrometer on perfectly flat surfaces and read at eye level when testing salinity.

Setup your aquarium where you'll enjoy it the most - out of sight, out of mind

Don't settle for a hydrometer, just buy a refractometer.

Purchase the biggest tank setup that your budget allows. The smaller the tank, the lower the water volume - lower the water volume, problems occur faster and are harder to handle.
