Ever find an underlying issue that caused it?

Nope. Nothing ever really came up that was out of the ordinary.........I checked for pests, temp was always stable (I even checked in the middle of the night), parameters have been stable for quite some time now, I made no new changes to the tank. I have no idea.

However, I did switch from Instant Ocean to Reef Crystals, at which part things started to turn around. But it seems that for now they are healed over nicely (which happened pretty quick).

Ahhh, yes! Something I have experience with, although I'd rather not had the stress of it. I had this happen last december to my FF digi and a rainbow monti (although it lost all it's rainbowness)
They recovered and are both alive, growing and doing well today, about one year later.
I didn't do much to try and fix them. I may have upped my water changes and kept a closer eye on my parameters for a while and they got better.
