Got this little guy few days ago, opened up great until today, is this the dreaded pinched mantle disease? i observe my tank closely everyday and have not noticed anything harassing my clam. However, i think there is a tear of the bottom right part of the mantle?

Picture of it first day in the tank

Notice the bottom of the clam? Please help it :(

It doesn't look terrible to me. What type of lighting do you have it under? Can you tell if the "tear" is an actual tear or just a natural opening in the clam.

i do not think it is a natural opening, the first picture doesn't have the tear on it.. i have it under 2x250w metal halides ( 20k kelvin BLV ) . it's placed highest in the tank. I have some hitchhiker crabs in my tank. could they be causing harm to my clam?

look at the red circle, the tear is there.

It really doesn't look bad for a brand new clam. It may be a rip in the mantle, or it may be that the mantle is not being fully extended. What kind of flow do you have on the clam? They like low flow - if the flow is too high, it won't open fully.

The other possibility is that it may be picked on by some of your fish. What do you have in your tank? Dwarf angels occasionally nip at clam mantles...

As far as what to do for now....keep it in high light and low flow, and nothing else.

It could be closed because it's adjusting to the new lights. If it's an actual tear, then something most likely did it. I would monitor it and see if you can find a culprit. There's not much else you can do right now.

I'm pretty sure it's an actual tear, is it easy for them to heal?

here's my fish list, any ideas?

    Maroon clownfish pair
    saddleback clownfish pair
    clarkii clownfish pair
    blue damsel pair
    azure damsel
    humbug damsel
    purple stripe pseudochromis
    ong fin fairy wrasse
    Flametail blenny
    sailfin blenny
    powder brown tang
    yellow tang
    Foxface Lo
    Flasher Wrasse
    Multicolor Lubbock's Wrasse

    19 fishes total

The clam opened to full glory the very minute i put it in, it's sad to see it like that.. ANYWAY, the big question is, Does it look like pinched mantle disease?

It doesn't look like pinched mantle disease to me - too early to know anyway. From your list of fishes, I don't see any conspicuous clam munchers, but you never know. Just keep an eye on it as best you can.

Alright how does pinched mantle look like exactly?

Anyway i moved my clam a little to face the front, is it okay for it to be positioned this way? and notice the mantle on the left is more retracted than the right ::)
