Shattered 29G Tank

I know its tempered glass for a fact.

I've drilled many glass tanks.

Before you started to drill, did you take and precautions to making sure the glass you were drilling was not tempered glass?

If not its a n00b mistake.

 

I'd be surprised if a regular 29 is tempered.
I'll let you know in a few weeks when I drill mine haha

 

Like I said. The 20g I tore down was tempered. How do you tell if glass is tempered

 

I've read you can use a laptop with a bright white background and a pair of polarized sunglasses.
Put the laptop behind the glass and look thru the tank from the front wearing the glasses and you'll see an obvious shift in the brightness of the laptop screen if the glass is tempered.

 

I'm pretty sure I've read the 20's and 29's are not tempered tho...

 

That really looks like tempered glass to me; strange that it would be though...

 

Tempered glass 100%.

When tempered breaks it forms small little chunks, when non tempered glass breaks it forms jagged sharp sharps.

So this is deff tempered.

 

100% tempered. I learned the hard way too, ALWAYS contact the manafacture of your aquarium before drilling to see if its tempered. :-/

 

Yes, i'll admit it was a noob mistake; it was not an expensive tank so I assumed it was standard glass.

 

Thank you everyone for the quick responses! To be safe, I have ordered a 35mm diamond hole saw bit from BRS that has a solid edge rather than teeth like mine. Good thing too, mine was $35 and the one on BRS is only 10. Thanks again!
