It sounds like the sand is fine grain? Personally, I wouldn't mess with the sand. That may be deep enough to get pockets of bad stuff. If it's nitrates you are intending to cure, you should be able to clear it up with water changes.

There are other solutions to help reduce your nitrates, such as DSB, Macroalgae, Algae scrubber, and a nitrafier, but the best and by far most used is water changes. I would do water changes every couple of days, and cut back a little bit on how much you feed.

That is if you are trying to solely reduce nitrates.

I am dosing Redsea reef energy part a and b. Also using Kent Buffer.. I am not dosing with anything but the Kent now and only feeding twice a week now. Going to try and spot feed my corals but really worried about the Nitrates...

I am going to do 3 water changes a week. That is about 15 gallons.

Alk was low.. I am using RedSea Coral Pro salt. I have 55g drum and Make my own RO/DI water. THen Mix saltwater in 5 gallon batches. Mix for about an hour with a pump and then add to the tank.

I looked up red sea a and b. Looks like there are trace elements including iodine. I had a bad experience with trace elements early on. I dosed a fraction of what was recommended and the corals didn't like it. Some died.
