I started with about 4-6inches of CC in my 125DT.

Took alot of it out, and only run about 1-1&1/2 inches now.

I am getting some cyano lately, I vacuum it every water change too!
    NOthing has died... yet.

I read/heard that the cyano on the CC/sand can kill ceriths and the like, ?.

I've used both sand and no sand with success.. they both work its just a matter of cleanliness and attention to your tank.

I know I did. I had zero on the nitrate scale for as long as this tank has been up now it's 30 ppm.. Boom just like that. I am doing water changes daily to get them down... I'll let y'all know how it goes. I still have about 50% of my sand left to take out.

after people have been telling me not to vacuum my sand bed, i've been watching amphipods at night fight over pieces of fish poop and other undesirable materials that i usually try to remove asap. going to just let it right for a bit, keep my tank dirty but at the same time keep up with weekly 25% water changes (29g biocube)

so far everything in the tank is prospering and i see loads of life in every nook and cranny i flash with a spotlight

That's exactly what you want! All I do is clean the glass and siphon out of the water column on water changes. "Bugs" handle the rest
