Each species has different requirements for the sandbed. Some need fine sand/mud for digging burrows, some need course sand and rubble. 2-3" would be fine. The rock is personal preferrence as long as there is at least one good sized piece in there for cover.

Same way you transfer anything home from the LFS... in a bag. I drove for 2.5 hours with my wennerae in a bag, I think you will be fine getting back home too. Bare in mind your LFS will probably not be able to order much in the way of specific mantises.

    Reefmonkeys answers are spot on.

Get some base rock from reef cleaners or some one with similar rock. I got some rock from there that made a great mantis den. Full of holes. My wennerae had 6-7 different exits from his den. 1-2 pounds is fine and personal preference. Just make sure if your mantis lives in live rock cavity you have rock big enough for him to make a comfortable den.

I bet you are excited. I don't remember seeing my guy very much when I first got him. I put him in the tank and he dove into a rock within 3 seconds and all I saw for a couple days was eyes peaking out at me. Then he started to warm up to his new surroundings and began to explore and build new dens and tunnels, and smash hermit crabs.... and typing that really makes me miss fister. :( He was such a cool dude. Make sure you post lots of pictures when you get him!

Man it sucks..you lose one and I'm getting one. It's strange how animals become part of our lives, part of our family and we mourn them when they leave. I really appreciate the support and answers you've given me over the past couple weeks. And I will post tons of pics and a video here and there.
I don't know if it's red or green or mottled. It wasn't the species I really wanted. But all of that stopped mattering when I got Richards email this morning. I haven't even seen it and I love it already.
