[Resolved] Can I reuse sand?

I have 80lbs of sand in my 60g right now that has been in the tank for just about 6mo. I am currently downsizing to a 40g and was wondering if I could use the sand without causing any issues with nitrates and such.

 

6 months doesn't seem too long. How deep is it? The depth is what can trap the nitrates I think. Hopefully someone more knowledgeable will chime in...

 

In some areas, just about 3in at the deepest. In most of the tank it is 1-2in though.

 

I've changed tanks a few times before, sandbed and all, with no problems. If you haven't had a sand sifter in the old tank, you might want to vacuum the sand first, then run extra carbon in your new tank for the first couple weeks just as a precaution.

 

Sounds fine to me. Usually if it's over two years old I'll replace it as it tends to accumulate crud. However less than that is usually worth saving.

As far as sand sifting goes, I have some dwarf and florida ceriths, some nassarius, and a fighting conch.

 

In that case, you'll be just fine.
