How hard to care for SPS coral compared to LPS.

  1. Never had SPS before.

Well the Power head it covered in coraline so i cant read anything! It's a pretty big one though. It was used on a 180 before me and looks pretty powerful!

    Maybe a K5?

Here's a link to the old Koralia pumps & their flow rate w/ dimensions of each pump.

I would go with 2 of the K evo 1400s plus what you already have.

that is a media reactor, not a Ca reactor. A Ca reactor will have a chamber for calcium media, a CO2 tank and a place to inject CO2 into, as well as a recirculating pump. They are quite sophisticated and will usually cost you about 300+ dollars.

That pump is perfect. You might want to price shop around as I have seen those exact wavemakers in the upper 40's on other sites.

Lastly, i forgot to mention Kalkwasser as a possibility for maintaining levels. its actually perfect for your application as of now. It comes in a powder that has a 1:1 ratio of Ca and Alk so adding it will maintain both levels. To start, it would probably be best to do water changes and the occasional dose of kalk when its needed.

Is there such a thing as too much flow, Hermano? Dingo, do you think if i got 2 K evo 1400s plus what i have and Kalkwasser from Kent Marine i would be set? Does phosphate effect corals at all? I do have a consistant .25 of it in my tank. Geez I feel like i am having 2 different conversations here! haha LOL

You are having 2, but about the same thing. So is that 2 in 1? lol I like making things confusing. Only kidding. :)

Too much flow, I am not sure. I mean...I wouldn't go 100X. lol. But I think high flow is better. Now, that[2x 1400 plus the ph you have] would be about 4000-5000gph in your DT, but that is about 60-65X turnover in a 70g.

More important than high flow is chaotic flow. 2000 gph from one pump is not near as good as 1500 from 4 pumps.

It is this chaotic random flow coming from all directions that really makes SPS happy.

High flow is important though. SPS do not like any debris to settle within it's branches.

So high, random flow. I think 3 pumps should be good for that. Each 1400?
