Yes the seaweed can add to the nitrates. On the back of the package it says remove all uneaten seaweed...probably for that reason. I have been battling a nitrate problem for 3 weeks now it was somewhere between 80+ now I have it down to 20. I actually hate the algae that developes from the nitrates. I got green algae on my glass and brown diatoms...which I hate. Do small water changes, monitor your nitrates while doing the water changes. Try to blow you LR from time to time as detritus can build up on the rock.

Its an antibiotic and I used it on my reef when I had a red slime takeover and it worked wonders. Makes your skimmer have a heart attack, but other then that it had no ill effects on anything else in my tank whatsoever. The red slime was gone (and has stayed gone, been almost a year now) in just a couple days. Check it out. It's well worth it, IMO.

Well I hope that stuff works beacause I just purchased it. I've had the red slime problem for months. I've been blowing it of with a syringe and suking it out durring water changes but it keeps coming back. Thanks for the info!
