Protein skimmer during cycle?

    Well I need a small one bc my Skimmer section is 5"x10".

    Cycling with dry rock - I would have lights on
    Cycling with uncured live rock - I would have lights off as there would be lots of nutrients, plus algae on the rock , combine that with light and you know what happens next

    Hi, sorry to resurrect an old thread but I have this question myself and wonder if there is any new thinking? I'm planning on leaving the skimmer off while I cycle since I have mostly baserock and just a little liverock/sand (from previous tank) and nothing else in it.

    Nope. IMO, it's the same.

    With mostly dry rock, you want the DOCs to remain to help boost your bio-filter. With uncured live rock, OTOH, you'll get a lot of die-off. Skimming and even occasionally vacuuming out larger debris will help keep nutrient levels down and speed the cycle without interfering with the bio-filter.
