    I wouldn't use undergravel filter plates, they'll trap detritus under them. Try what's called "plastic egg crate", that seems to be what most people use.

    well in my country im not getting them. i tried alot to find out. what if i make huge holes on plates? im not gona use them as filter, just use them for distributing the weight. it can work as a plenum though. i cant have a DSB coz the height of the tank is only 15"...

    Do Not Use Raw Styrofoam in your tank!!! It is a chemical cocktail that when breaks down will prove deadly to your system. As most tank designers become creative and built with foam, they also mention the fact that they coat the foam art item with a silicone coating, or 'paint' a coating over the Styrofoam that comes in contact with the water. There's a reason for this. It's not just to be decorative, it's to keep the leaching effect from happening. There's also one method that when using styrofoam for decoration, to coat it with silicone molding gel and wash away the foam underneath to keep it from contacting water.

    I think your best bet is to cut PVC rings and use those as "legs" to rest the rock on.

    I looked up Thermocol. Apparently it's the brand name for the first and largest styrofoam manufacturer. Who knew.
