Hey Otty, could you shed some light (sorry no pun intended) on what happened here for me please. I understand the mechanical failure part, but what exactly happened when you replaced the bulbs and "cooked about 80% of the coral"? Was it heat?...
I just wired up my 400w SPS 14,000k bulbs so i plan to run them on my 150gallon. I've heard mention about a break in period but I am not sure of this process. When my sump is completed i plan to move the 150 out of the garage and put in pace of the current 135gallon then run the metal halides. There wont be coral for a while in there though.

    (BTW, happy B-day !!)

    Thanks in advance

I was the intensity of the light. The old bulbs had deteriorated so bad that when the new lights were installed it was way brighter then the corals were used to. Just like you take coral from some power compact and throwing them under MH's for 8 hours.

Well I got my Energy Recovery Ventilators (ERV) hooked up sunday night and from the signs of my controller fresh air is very good for the tank. My pH has not dropped any in the past two night since I have fresh air blowing in the tanks hood now. Rayjay turned me on to this as he uses a HRV (Heat Recovery Ventilator) with all his tanks.

Next to the generator it's about the best money spent.

Here is the graph from my ACIII Pro and the host of my signature generator. It hasn't dropped below 8.38 in the last two nights and as you can see from the last 7 days it usually drops to 8.12 of a night.

So, do you believe this is due to the air exchange in your home during the evening hours is better...or is the ERV only exchanging air above the tank in the area of your lights, and thus when the lights are off so is the lighting exhaust fans and thus there is a bit more CO2 buildup?

so you're using ERV for your hood? or you got one spec'd and designed for your whole house?

The ERV is getting all the CO2 out of the air thus allows the pH to rise.

I got one big enough to do a 4,000 sq ft home and mine is half that. For fresh air I split the line from the ERV and one line goes to the tank hood and the other one goes to the central airs return duct.
