Outstanding work so far, take your time on the silicone, but use a lot.
When you smooth out the beads dip your finger in water to keep the silicone from sticking to your finger.

Wow, that setup looks great! I hadn't thought about using U-channel for sliding doors.

Yeah - gotta have 3reef. In some of the first shots you will see an undersea scene - which happened to be the BBC version of LIFE which aired last year in the UK - the current US version is being narrated by Oprah BUT the world famous David Attenborough did the UK one - and you just have to love Attenborough!

To anyone - if you get an opportunity to see the BBC series of LIFE i highly suggest that you do. There are some differences between those episodes and how the US ones seem to be.

    :)

I like surfing on 3reef from the couch. :) or the livingroom floor if i am working on something lol ...

thank you! I wanted the option of doors completely off if i want. Day to day skimmer monitoring etc. But when company comes or i want to enjoy moonlights with no other light spill then the panels slide in.

I am likely going to apply some sort of handles (saw some cool starfish ones in brushed metal) to the panels. Nothing obnoxious, just a cool simple reef-ish touch to the front :)

    the motto of this post?

never ever underestimate the power of VELCRO!

for the inside of the stand, i had some pegboard cut to size at Lowe's and then spray painted it out in the parking lot since we had some nice sun and a breeze.

Once again, applied Velcro to the interior of the stand framing and stuck the spray painted pegboard panels in. Once again, removable if need be so.

I bought a 44 piece pegboard hanger set (variety pack kind of thing) and it works like a charm for all the bits and pieces!

Once the plumbing and electrical is sorted out with the new tank, there will be some type of back panel even if only a partial area of the back.

I am beyond happy with this. It actually turned out! And i did not have to drill a single hole into the frame or any panel piece :) (which was the goal....)

again, thanks for all the encouraging words and thanks for looking. I really hope someone else finds this "stand mod" inspirational in the event that it suits their needs or they score a nice deal on a basic metal stand.

I will say this much - with all the cool colors and textures that Krylon Fusion makes? You can really do some awesome stuff these days.

This looks like car paint - it has a metallic fleck in it. If you wanted an incredibly brilliant slick look, spray paint one side and then use the clear unpainted side as the finished side. Ultra modern look. The only reason i did not do that was for me personally it would likely have given off a bit too much glare. The inside surfaces are painted solid black to eliminate light transmittence although once again with some clever masking, you could create clear area "windows" in your painted areas if you wanted.

I highly recommend this method to anyone. It is simple and gives you choices in the look. If i need to tear the stand apart to fix a leak or whatever (god forbid), i can.

    thanks again!

The organization under this tank is outstanding. If someone can put that much work into keeping the underside that clean I can only imagine what the final product will look like. Great work!

    Thanks Steve!

I visited your thread earlier to see the new rock supports - nice work!

I have to admit that the whole M & Ms pic made me laugh!
I spared you all by NOT posting me in my "Skittles Skivvies" (just joking...really!)

thanks for the kind words - this helps my confidence a LOT!
