Hi i ran all my usual checks on my tank water this morning, and everything was as normal appart from my nitrate witch seemed higher than usual its normally below 10 mg/l and today it showed over 25 mg/l.

I am running my ro water at the moment and plan on doing a partial water change to help it back to normal.

My question to you is what could cause a sudden rise in nitrate? what can be done to keep it down? and will a partial waterchange help?

    any answers greatly appreciated.

also if it helps i had a chalk goby that wouldnt feed and it sadly died during the week, could this cause a rise in nitrate??

if you let the goby dead in the tank it would absolutely raise nitrates...yes a water change will help... over feeding can also raise ur nitrates, and an overstocked tank too... and then sometimes (like in my case) for some reason its almost and impossible task to keep the nitrates down...only in my case no one can figure out why my nitrates stay up :(

    Thanks for the replys,

I took the goby out the next morning, to be quite honest i think i may have over fed the fish, i fed more than usual to try and get the goby to feed!

I suppose its likely that overfeeding is the cause, ive had the same fish in for a few months and its always been low! until i fed them more this week!

I will do the water change tomorrow and hopfully that will lower it again!

Anyone got any idea how to reduce nitrates without the use of a sump/fuge??

Theres always carbon dosing (vodka, sugar, vinegar, or a combo of all 3). . . I just started last week to help out with my nitrates and so far have seen some decent results for such a short time. Just do TONS of reading on it first and make sure you have an oversized skimmer and are comfortable with param testing a few times a week when your first getting going.

    Sounds like the cause.

Can we get some more details on your tank? Sump? Filtration? Size?
