    I would think the maintenance you have done has caused the spike. I would just do a few smaller water changes over the next couple of days.
    Your bioload may also be a bit high for a 55G. You will have to watch your your Nirites and Nitrates long term to determine that though

    Add clams, they are excellent at bringing nitrate down to zero!

    Wow clams. Sounds good. I've got high nitrates but low nitrites, which is better. Anyway I don't have a skimmer. might be the prob?
