Also the Canon 100mm (though the f/2.8L version, not sure if this is what you have too)

The D3100 is the newer model and has a higher resolution than the 5000. The 5000 runs approximately $150 less than the 3100.

You mean the 5100 is the newer 5000. The d3100 is a newer camera but is a step below in their product lines.

Actually no, the "X100's" are the newer models. The D3100 has a higher resolution than the D5000, 14.2mp vs. 12.2,mp, records video in 1080p vs. 720p, 3.0" screen versus 2.7" and double the ISO. The D3100 is an all around improvement over the D5000. I was providing a comparison of the camera he was going to purchase, versus the one he did. Higher model numbers don't always mean better. Either camera is good, just more for your money with the D3100.

    Here's some comparisons.

    Nikon D3100 vs D5000

    Prices:

    D3100 @ BestBuy for $650

    Nikon - D3100 14.2-Megapixel Digital SLR Camera - Black - D3100 Kit with 18-55mm VR Lens

    D5000 @ BestBuy for $579.99

    Nikon - 12.3-Megapixel D5000 DSLR Camera with 18-55mm Lens - Black - D5000 with 18-55mm Lens

Well yes, it's an all around improvement over the D5000. But the D5100 is the continuation from the D5000, not the D3100. That's just because tech moves so fast the old mid range becomes low end in one product cycle.

That's also based on raw stats on not performance testing, which shows the D3100 not quite living up to the D5000 is a few situations. Check out DP Review's conclusions page for the cameras, where they let you get a comparison.

Awesome shots, everyone. I love the bugs in particular. The line of glasses, is cool too.

The photos below were taking with my Nikon P90...all raw images; no editing.
