Hello all. I'm new here to the forum and salt water reef hobby. I am ready to start learning about all the aspects of salt water tanks. I currently have a 35 gallon with about 45 lbs of live rock. I purchased a few frags for the tank to start some growth. Looking to find out about different kinds with beauty that grow rapidly. I'm very excited to start this new salt water hobby, although I have had fresh water tanks for many years.

    Hi and welcome!

I sometime miss the tranquil simplicity of a freshwater planted tank, but this is much more exciting!

Fast growing corals - I'd suggest starting out with soft coral, kenyas, green star polyp (GSP), xenia (I'm fascinated by the pulsing varieties), and mushrooms for interesting and inexpensive starters. Zoanthids, ricordia, and a whole host of other soft corals will round that out. They're fun and grow fast, which can also make them pests, so plan accordingly (keep xenias and GSP on their own rocks!!). Candy canes, frogspawn/hammers, and some other hard corals (mostly large polyp stoney -LPS) can add some depth.

You can often find local reefers giving a lot of those first mentioned corals away, they are that prolific.

I started adding some montiporia, having good success with that.

Each type of coral has so many varieties, and I feel that I need every kind!! It will be a while before I get bored.
