My 20nano (less than 2 months) is still free from diatom. No skimmer. I have changed out a few items, but for ease of maintanence, to be clutter free and long-term tank health.
I did a long cycle and few water changes allowing tank to mature. I have been feeding inhabitants daily including phytoplankton for corals. If you are having algae problems give the phospure pads a try.Aquarium Chemical Filtration & Algae Removal: Drs. Foster & Smith PhosPure® Pads

Thanks, but i can't take the credit. I believe it to be the macroalgae and the phospure pads. My last nano reef I gave up because I was fighting unsightly algae all the time. Also, this time I have a good RO/DI unit.
