    I think that's a good idea!

Also, the bulbs in the fixture now are Giesemann. I need to replace them. Is there anything comparable or similar?

I use ATI and love them. Start with a combination of Coral Plus and Blue Plus in even numbers and go from there.

I also happen to be one of the folks that think more people should be switching back to or using t5 or halide (for the experts out there, feel free to use and enjoy LED, they seem to work well if you know what you're doing - for idiots like me they're too complicated). I say that for context - adding a few LEDs to add some shimmer is a great idea. Careful with the white LEDs though, just enough to get a subtle effect.

As far as the life of T5 bulbs has anyone studied if the actinic last longer (as good)light then the full spectrum/white light bulbs?

Pure Actinic bulbs tend to last longer.

I love T-5 setups, but it sounds like you had a very poor ballast and reflectors. The brightness of quality halides trumps any T-5 tanks I have seen.

I am pretty sure the MH ballast was not very good.. it was a 150 trying to run 175 bulbs..

I found a combo I liked in the T5s I am using 2 Lagoon Blue and 2 Pure Actinics.. looks very nice
