That's correct, a bacterial population needs a surface to cling to, however don't get too hung up on this as there is enough surface area in one cup of sand to accomodate enough bacteria for your tank. :)

For the reason above you need enough rock to make the tank look aestically pleasing to you, more rock does not equate to more biology in most cases.

Sounds like a great idea :)

If you fill baffles up with rock fragments you will certainly help with any bubbles and it should work, but be aware that you will get erosion of the rock and you will get a layer of silt. The silt itself is probably harmless, but eventually it has to be cleaned out or it will start to circulate in the main tank. That's probably one reason why bio balls could be a better option.

So I'd rather have bioballs submerged than live rock to prevent the silt. Check check double check no check check.

    I'm on the trolly now.

Or neither :) The reason that you put baffles in is to eliminate the air bubbles :)

Personnaly I can't stand the artificial look of bioballs. Doesn't jive with all the work to create a natural appeal in your tank. Again JMO.

    Craig,

I think the bio balls were meant for the sump :)

    LOL, fair enough :)

    Let's stick to a sump with " natural appeal " :)

I just want something where it looks cool and I don't have to do a lot .... like TV.

I don't care what the production crew looks like, I only care what the actors look like.

Well mate, quit now before you spend all your money, or hire someone to come in and maintain your aquarium :)

Nothing in life is maintenance free, nothing!
